2/28/2023 0 Comments Tony iommi on jimi hendrix![]() ![]() I've quoted this before, but here's the great Michael Bloomfield's assessment of Clapton, from a Rolling Stone interview done in February 1968. ![]() It led people to feel that Clapton was a "real musician" and Hendrix was a "just a showman." Sometimes he would play solos completely consisting of feedback. In contrast to Clapton, a lot of Hendrix's solos sounded like they were sprayed out of a fire hose- so many fragments of ideas and so many sounds in such a short time. His solos were beautifully constructed and logical, and, since he was much less experimental than Hendrix, there were no "distractions." Some people hadn't yet caught up with Hendrix, and thought he relied on gimmicks and noise. I think it was easier to comprehend Clapton than Hendrix, circa 1967-68. And Clapton has always looked up to Hendrix, and says it freely. ![]() It's easy in 2020 to say that Hendrix wiped the floor with Clapton, but remember that Hendrix let Chas Chandler bring him to England on the one condition that Chas would introduce him to Clapton. (The show was at his school.) He's basically said that seeing Cream and Hendrix that night changed the course of his life.Ĭlapton and Hendrix were really THE two guys at the time.
